We start the tour with a short drive along the Boka-bay shore toward Perast town.
This little town of Perast is situated at the foot of St. Elijah Hill, opposite the narrow Verige strait, where the innermost bays of Risan and Kotor converge. This easternmost shore of Montenegro was the earliest inhabited area in the Boka-bay. Throughout the centuries, many empires battled for control of Perast but this town also reached its peak in the 18th century under the Venetian Republic.
Right in front of the town, there are two beautiful islets: St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks, each with a picturesque chapel.
As an only artificially island in the Adriatic Sea, the island of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Skrpjela) is the star of this place. According to a legend, the island was made over the centuries by local sailors who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the reef in the sea in 15 century.
The island has been built for over 100 years, as well as the church on it… In addition to many highly valued content, this church contains the largest collection of votive plates in the world, which count over 2000 and the oldest votive plate dates back to 1624.
In the near vicinity of the Gospa od Skrpjela, the island which people ascended from the sea, lies Saint George Island (Sveti Djordje), the island of completely different nature and destiny. Surrounded by rocky walls and hidden by high cypress canopy, this island seems to hide a secret and does not allow curious eyes to disturb its rather uncanny peace…
After visiting Perast town we go back to Kotor to visit the old town of Kotor.
